Rizal Day

June 19 is the birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero.

Rizal was the founder of La Liga Filipina, a civic organization that subsequently gave birth to the Katipunan led by Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Aguinaldo. He was a proponent of institutional reforms by peaceful means rather than by violent revolution. The general consensus among Rizal scholars, however, attributed his martyred death as the catalyst that precipitated the Philippine Revolution.

However, we, Filipinos, are celebrating Rizal day on his death. The anniversary of Rizal's death is commemorated as a Philippine holiday called Rizal Day. The House of Representatives seeks to move Rizal Day to June 19.

The House of Representatives has passed on third and final reading House Bill No. 5408 which seeks to move the observance of Rizal day to June 19, the birthday of Dr. Jose Rizal, from December 30, the date of his execution. The measure will amend Administrative Code of 1987, specifically Section 26, Chapter 7, Book I of Executive Order No. 292.
